|
|
Issue Two is assembled, copyedited (thanks Christa!) and going through layout. I hope to have the layout done before tomorrow, but it might be tough because i am headed out to New Orleans for a long weekend.
The issue took longer this time because of the increase in content. I have some very interesting nonfiction pieces in this issue as well as a marked increase in fiction.
Can you tell me, what are your respective interests in nonfiction? Is it something we should continue? Sparingly? More?
I'd really love to hear. _________________ Tim Deal

Well it's hard to say without seeing the nonfiction pieces that are in issue two and to whether I can say add more or less is not up to me, but if it's dark in tone or in nature then I'd say why not have it in the magazine.
Once issue two is out and readers get the chance to digest the nonfiction, then you'll have a real good understanding on whether you should add more or not.
But if you keep up with the nonfiction...just remember, you'll have to change the tag for the magazine. No longer can it say, "The Bold New Voice in Fiction".
Just my two cents... _________________ Soon All Your Fears Will Come True!

I tend to like a mix of fiction and nonfiction (reviews, articles, etc.) in a magazine, but probably end up reading more of the fiction. I also like interviews and articles that focus on the writing process.
Have fun in New Orleans. It is a great city. My wife and I are going next month for a much needed vacation.

Unless it's a subject that I am passionate about or a really cool interview, I tend to skip non-fiction. I'm so lazy that way

I tend to hit the nonfiction first in magazines. I read the reviews, interviews, essays, and leave the fiction for last, for when I have time to really dig in and enjoy.
Rue Morgue does nonfiction especially well. They cover a wide arena of topics and have some excellent coverage of books, films, etc. With really cool horror focus on haunted travels, visiting HP Lovecraft's house, and stuff like that. _________________ Tom Piccirilli is the author of twenty novels including THE COLD SPOT, THE MIDNIGHT ROAD, THE DEAD LETTERS, and A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN. I really loved the article on 1968. I would definitely be interested to see more of that kind of analysis. I also like articles like "Bodysnatchers" in Issue 1 - real-life, historical, bizarre/"truth is stranger than fiction" types of things. And interviews are always helpful to aspiring writers!
As for reviews, current movie and book reviews are interesting, but honestly they are a dime a dozen if you pay attention to the newspapers/blogs/RottenTomatoes.com/etc. I would really love to see more reviews of older movies and books, classics, cult favorites, forgotten but good, forgotten and awful, etc. (In fact I know a guy who might be into this kind of thing, and will ask him, if you're interested, Tim.) _________________ Christa M. | I love nonfiction as long as its completely twisted and absurd. There's real life stories out there that can top any horror done by the masters.

Yeah!!!!!! Issue 2 looks so f*@#ing sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
Ok, so I'm a little biased because it's the first time seeing my fiction in print, but even without that, it is very cool.
