Horror Comics

Postby Phil Kuhlman on Sun Aug 17, 2008 8:14 am

It's not as big in the comic world as the whole cape n cowl thing, but horror comics are still a pretty big part of the industry. They would have been much bigger had it not been for the "Seduction of the Innocent" book that ruined everything from how artists could draw the bulge in superman's pants to the way batman and robin were seen as something other than a father/son relationship. The biggest blow the book and following trials had was the almost total destruction of the Horror genre in comics which barely managed to survive, such as what was done to EC comics (the creators of Tales from the Crypt, and many others).

But horror is back in comics and in the last few years, thanks to things like the Vertigo imprint from DC, indy publishers like Dark Horse who brought the world Hellboy, and reprints of the old EC books.

So what horror comics are on your reading tables if any? I'm the first to admit I'm a big cape fan, got massive stacks of Superman and Captain America filling shelf space in my room, but as it's getting easier to find good horror in comics I'm able to enrich that collection with the darker stuff as well.

Hellboy is a must read for any horror fan. Mignola's work in his BPRD-universe is awesome so any of the spin-offs are worth a read as well. I recently stumbled into a book called Fall of Cthulhu which seems pretty cool, but as I only got a few issues of it here and there I haven't gotten to really grasp the full thing yet. Even the mainstream universes of DC and Marvel have great Horror work coming out of them nowadays. Moonknight and Ghost Rider have become very well done dark reads, as well as the some of the darker stuff at DC. The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum are two of the best horror stories out there that you don't realize are horror till it's already got ya. I know there's a new series from Marvel based on the Stand, as well as the Dark Tower, and a mini-series adapting the work of Lovecraft, but I haven't gotten to read them yet. Anyone know how they are?

So who else is stuck in comic land with me, and who's found some scary stuff out there?

Comics! Comic books are for kids (he says in case anyone is listening, then motions you to another room where he whispers).

Well, Marvel did a nice series where almost all of the super heros became zombies, that was pretty cool. I still don't see how Wolverine became one, but what do I know. The Evil Dead comics are a fun read and of course the Dark Tower is very well done. I've been meaning to check out Dark Horse, and there are some indi's out there that I just ordered. Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls VS Zombies (To find a comic shop near you, simply call toll free: 1-888-266-4226 or visit the online locator: http://csls.diamondcomics.com/default.asp)

It may not be classic horror, but it's weird and scary and the guy can draw. It's called "Distant Corner" by Steve Cobb and it's delightfully demented.

A friend brought up the first six volumes of "The Walking Dead," which I read until 1:30am. Um, not a good comic to read that late at night. ;)

I know this is an old thread, but I recently received two sets of Dan Brereton's "The Nocturnals" comic books. I read both of them and was fairly impressed. "The Nocturnals" are geared towards fans of crime comics, horror, and science fiction. They've also, within the past several years, been released in Hardcover collections. I would highly suggest them to anybody looking for a solid horror comic read.
"Loads of children read books about dinosaurs, underwater monsters, dragons, witches, aliens, and robots. Essentially, the people who read SF, fantasy and horror haven't grown out of enjoying the strange and weird."
