Well, it's not for everyone, but the grad school thing really helped me with the length problem. When you have class every week, and you gotta have stories ready for every class, and your fellow classmates and prof's are reading your stuff, you quickly start learning how to cut out all the chaff.
Plus - and keep in mind, this route isn't for everyone, it just works well for me because I already teach English and have a BA in English - I find that for us genre writers, it really strengthens our core writing abilities, because most of your profs and students won't care a wit about genre tools - they just want to see solid, believable characters and deep, human stories. When you take that stuff, ADD genre elements to it - you've got my favorite kind of story.
