Tim, Phil Cate and everyone else, thank you for your heartfelt comments. I told my mom about it and she thought it was very sweet of you and wanted me to extend her appreciation.

JC. You made my eyes water. I lost my grandmother and grandfather three months apart and both from pneumonia, despite the fact that they had been divorced for over thirty years, they couldn't go on without the other. The scene you described was almost carbon copy for both of them. I still go up north to visit there homes and I never leave with dry eyes. The hardest part is hearing the strongest people you know tell you that they are ready to die. It sounds selfish but when you hear that all you think about is that "you" aren't ready for them to die. Congratulations on the two new additions on their way.

I'm absolutely floored how this anthology has been bringing people together to share their stories about how this horrible disease has touched our lives. Hopefully one day we will talk of cancer the way we do about small pox and polio and the black plague. Ugly things that occassionally rear their heads in small, remote villages every twenty or thirty years.

I almost forgot. When we've sent in our subs is there supposed to be a confirmation e-mail sent upon its receipt? I know things are busy so I thought I'd pose the question on here instead of sending a query.

Brandon - That's the truth. I don't think I'll ever REALLY be able to let go of her and move on. It's one of those things that we always think "I wish Nana was here to see this..." or "Nana was supposed to do this with us."

As for your question...I know I got a standard form confirmation for all three subs...

You know, other than the obvious writing reasons, there's one big reason I wanted to submit to this, and was excited to get an acceptance back from them.

Two years ago my grandmother was diagnosed with colon cancer. She had gone out walking the day before, and assumed her back pain was arthritis. Apparently the shoulder pain was simply "old twist" as she called it, but an x-ray revealed several spots. Further studies told us that she had cancer, had it for a while, and the odds were very low.

Upon learning this she decided very quickly, and very simply, that there would be no chemo if she would only have a chance at another year. In her own words, she "would have liked to make 100, but 86 wasn't bad" and she'd "done a lot for a hick from the sticks." Having made such a decision, she proceeded to make her amends, say her goodbyes, and prepare for the inevitable.

For two months we watched her, somedays strong and somedays unable to climb from her bed. We sat and talked with Nana, the woman who had raised two generations of my family, who had picked us up from school and looked after her nieces and nephews. Family came from all over the United States to say goodbye to this matriarch, and her grandchildren (my siblings and I) spent as much time watching movies with her, talking, and making promises.

On Thanksgiving she, for the first time in my life, could not get up from bed. On painkillers she slept, and was coherent long enough to speak a few words to me before thinking I was one of her old boyfriends. The next day her sister came to say goodbyew, a woman on death's door herself, and I was woken up by a phone call at ten in the morning telling me to get over there.

We sat with her all day, this woman who had always been so strong, as she passed from one world into the next. She had no regrets, no fear of death, and I'll never forget her final words to me, holding my hand an hour before her death, as she told me to "be a good boy" and "not cry". I wasn't able to keep my promise on the second part, though I don't think she expected me to, and have tried to keep my promise on the first (though my wife will tell you I fall short there, as well).

This woman was the world to my family, so much that for the first time I saw my father cry at her bedside. His words summed it up best for me after her funeral as we both stared at the sky: "She worried about me, I worried about her, and we both worried about the rest of you."

This fall I'll be welcoming my second daughter (and first son) into the world, and giving her the name of the strongest woman I ever knew. A lady who wasn't scared to die, just regretted that she didn't make 100. A woman with nothing left unfinished, who had truly done her work on Earth. I wonder, if the cancer had been treatable, if there had been a more surefire way, how much longer she would have been here. I regret my new children will never get to know her. I miss speaking to her every single day when I wake up and each night when I sleep.

So, that's why I love this anthology already, why I love the idea, and why I love...yes, love...though it is man-love, guys...Phil and everyone else who has been touched by this horrible disease, why I pray for a cure, and why I am glad, if not elated, to be part of this anthology at all.

Okay, everyone's going to wonder what's up with me I'm all teary now...

On a good note, according to the ad at the top of the board I am the 999.999 (No comma, a definite point - ie, I don't equal a whole person. Gulp!) visitor and I win a car...

Drat! Forgot to press the link. I do that a lot. Very Happy

Ideally my automated system will send you a reply, if not I try to. I did receive "Shoes" in any event. Smile

Congratulations Natalie!

I'm working on my fourth and final submission right now, when I should be spending time on a nasty grant proposal.

I submitted four stories:
"Off the Beaten Path" (accepted)
"Baby Agatha"
"In Season"
"Take the Exit"

This was a real fun anthology to submit to. I love flash fiction, and to have to write about a region that I've only been to a couple times was challenging.

Can't wait to see the final product.

Congrats! But man, you guys are making me envious with your accepted submissions! Smile

A little over a week ago I submitted:
"Play Time" and "All Black and Soulless"
And I'm so anxious it's killing me!

Now that I'm done grading finals, (scooping eyes back into sockets), I'll probably try again, too. Flash fiction really helps you work on word count.

A professor of mine (whom I consider a bit of a mentor) once said that, in his opinion, flash fiction could never measure up to the impact of a good short story...

...Oh well!
